What is the general process for finding the right factory in China?

Its important to have a good idea of what you want in terms of product spec and planned a draft volume and price you are willing to pay beforehand. Volume is important as it means the factories in China will be interested. Having a realistic budget cost, even if its only ball park, gives the person sourcing a much more targeted idea of the quality required for the target market and can help in negotiations.

Getting the right factory is very important. All too often you see factories advertising on well known web sites claiming they make all sorts of items. Yes, they may have a lovely web site, and on the surface seem great, but when you go to visit them, they are a front. Often they are just an small office trying to sell items "on the side". These should be avoided. Hence, its important for you, or your representative to go and visit the factory and find out the facts, asking the right questions and seeing the real quality of the goods they produce. Its also important to measure how responsive they are to your questions or your requests. If they are difficult to communicate with at the start, then what do you think further down the line?

Actually, having a person on the ground in China that will go to the Factory helps in other ways. The number of times a client has asked for an amendment that the factory find confusing on email or on phone. Going face to face at the factory explaining some of the detail can make a huge difference to getting what you want.
